Its the Summer of 2017 and PSG Announces that they are going to pay Neymar's Release Clause. The player too informs the President and his teammates and best friends Lionel Messi (and Luis Suarez) that his final decision is to leave Barรงa....
Immediately, the Barca board held a meeting to discuss a player to replace Neymar. Two players are identified as prime targets; Liverpool's Phillipe Coutinho and Osmanne Dembele from Dortmund
Flash foward, the players brought in to Cover Neymar's absence failed to live up to their expected standards. Osmanne Dembele was ever on the treatment table. After being played in and out of his favorite position Coutinho too failed to rekindle his Liverpool spark. Hence, despite spending over €300 Million on players, the gap Neymar left was still Uncovered and it started getting bigger and bigger. Bartomeu AGAIN had to start looking for outside for a solution and this time only one man seemed to fit the bill; Atletico Madrid's ANTOINE GRIEZMANN!! And Immediately negotiations began.
In good faith Bartomeu informed team Captain, Lionel Messi and other veterans Gerald Pique, Iniesta and Javier Mascherano of their interest in the frenchman. All of them unanimously agreed that Griezmann would be a great addition to the squad.
In order to entice the player and smoothen the transfer, team captain Lionel Messi personally phones Griezmann explaining to him how much he is welcome at Barรงa, how He would love playing alongside him and how exciting the city of Barcelona is. Griezmann too sounded interested and assured him that he would join Barรงa pending the transfer negotiations.
Weeks passed and intensive negotiations between At. Madrid and Barca were held. Everything pointed in one way - Griezmann was joining Barca. Even the Barca first team heavy weights were almost 100% sure the Player was coming.
Fast forward again, before the start of the 2018 Word Cup, whilst everyone was waiting for Griezmann's impending arrive, the Frenchman made an announcement that Shocked the whole Barca Institution. He announced that he was staying at Atletico.
However, what infuriated everyone at Barรงa, was not his decision to remain at Atletico but the the manner in which he did it. Firstly, He announced his decision on live TV using a company Co-owned by Pique (a Barรงa vice captain) and in his full speech, the Frenchman took a swipe at Messi saying: "....At Atletico Madrid I'm an important player...I can lead the team to a Champions League trophy and even win Balon D'or....At Barca I will just be one more player....A corporal in Messi's Army...."
This Statement Angered Messi. Not only did he feel disrespected but Griezmann used him and Barca to negotiate a higher Salary Increase with Atletico.
Then came the world cup and fortune may be, Griezmann went and won the world cup with France. Meanwhile, Messi performed poorly at the tournament only managing to score one goal - A Penalty!
Months Later, EUFA announced the shortlist for the Euro Best Player Award. CR7, Mbappe and Modric made the Cut. Griezmann was left out. To vent his frustration for being snubbed, the Frenchman made a statement directly aimed at CR7 & MESSI. He blutantly and boldly claimed that he deserves special recognition as he was on the same level as CR7 and Messi. A lot of football fans, players and pundits rubished Griezmann's claims. Sergio Ramos even publicly slammed Griezmann. Ronaldo and Messi were too were not impressed especially Messi whom the Frenchman had now disrepected for the second time. However, He and CR7 decided not to respond.
Then came the 2019/20 Summer transfer window. Bartomeu called Messi asks his opinion on whom he thought should be signed upfront and the Captain immediately suggests that they should bring back his long lost friend - Neymar. The Brazilian too expressed his desire to return. PSG set their price; €200M or €120M + Semedo + Rakitic. However, Barca immediately informed Messi that the club had no money to buy back Neymar at that amount. They could only offer €80M (to be paid in instalments) + Firpo and Dembele (Loan) or better still look for cheaper options. Messi somehow, understood Barca's financial standing and even went away to enjoy his extended summer holiday.
Meanwhile, a few weeks after being informed that the club had no money to get Neymar, a New Marquee signing at a whooping €120 Million was announced - It was ANTOINE GRIEZMANN.........
